MistySOM for Low Power Embedded Compute Applications

IMPACT AREA: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
COLLABORATOR: Renesas
During the recent global chip shortage, MistyWest was experiencing challenges sourcing appropriate solutions for our clients to scale their products. Renesas Electronics was still providing supply chain reliability with reasonable lead-times thanks to their multi-fab facilities. MistyWest partnered with Renesas to develop our first internal product called the ‘MistySOM’ built around the Renesas RZ/G2L and RZ/V2L MPUs. MistySOM enables efficient and flexible development of edge compute applications ranging from human-machine interface (HMI) solutions to computer vision. Additionally, the MistyCarrier board effectively turns MistySOM into an SBC for rapid development and low-volume products (~ <100). Initial pre-orders of MistySOM and MistyCarrier were through a campaign on GroupGets in early 2023, with initial alpha results to come soon.

Borehole Muon Tomographer

IMPACT AREA: Planet
COLLABORATOR: Ideon Technologies

MistyWest miniaturized prototype muon tomographers that harness cosmic rays from space and are capable of providing x-ray-like visibility up to 1 km beneath the Earth’s surface.

Polar Bear Tracking Device

IMPACT AREA: Climate Action
COLLABORATOR: WWF

As climate change progresses, the evolving behavioural and migration patterns of polar bears has made it difficult to reliably track their locations. WWF and IDEO reached out to MistyWest to design an Argos based tracking device to help solve this problem.

Pre-Eclampsia Diagnostic Device

IMPACT AREA: Good Health & Well Being
COLLABORATOR: Lions Gate Technology

MistyWest was contracted to design, fabricate, and assemble an interface for a multi-sensor medical diagnostic platform intended to help identify pre-eclampsia in pregnant women in remote areas. 800 units were designed and assembled within 6 weeks, including design of a PCB to translate the audio signal to a digital input suitable for android tablets, and an enclosure suited for rapid low-volume manufacture. This device has been used in a broad clinical trial overseas, and several cases of Pre-Eclampsia have been identified and averted using field interventions.
